Texas Concealed Weapon Bills On College Campuses A Danger To Our Children

April 4, 2011 By Egberto Willies

I sent the following email to Texas State Representative Dan Huberty for his support of several bills in Texas allowing concealed weapons. These backward bills if passed will have a stinging impact on our social fabric in Texas and will make it tantamount to the “Wild Wild West”.

Dear Mr. Dan Huberty,

As someone who has spoken to you personally as well as one who have played racquetball with you and observed your demeanor with your fellow Kingwood area residents, I must admit that the laws I see you supporting and/or co-authoring are disappointing. More importantly many will have a material negative effect on your constituency.

Your legislation supporting concealed weapons on campus directly affects my family. As the father of a daughter attending the University of Texas at Austin, it gives me chills that a student sitting next to my daughter could be legally carrying a concealed weapon.

University campuses are high stressed locals with young adults, many of whom are still immature. A bad grade by a professor, a scorned boyfriend or girlfriend, a student on a hallucinogenic, and many other occurrences we can only dream of will most definitely cause an incident that will harm or kill. It will happen and it will be a direct result of your legislation.

Mr. Huberty, I am sure you are aware that more people on campuses carrying guns means more potential accidents with guns that may inadvertently harm and kill. You need not look too far but your own district where one of your constituencies was accidentally shot in one of our better local restaurants.

I urge you to poll your constituency. I have spoken to many Conservatives and Tea Party sympathizers and I am yet to find one who has children who supports your bill. Please withdraw your support for the bills HR86, HR750, HR698, HR1167, and HR1356 lest you will bear responsibility for what is sure to be a subsequent catastrophe.

Sincerely Yours,

Egberto Willies
