Today the Senate will vote on the President’s plan to put our veterans back to work. Republicans are considering voting for the bill because, as an aide to Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell told the Wall Street Journal: "the key was that the provision would not be paid for with tax increases on the rich" — once again making clear that defending indefensible tax giveaways for the 1% is their top concern.
Our men and women fighting overseas shouldn’t have to fight for jobs when they come home.
Americans need more jobs, including our veterans who’ve risked their lives to serve our country. Faced with a vote right before Veterans Day on the President’s veterans jobs plan, Washington Republicans have no excuses left — it had to come to this before they’d even think about helping the President put any American back to work. They’ve already voted before to keep veterans in unemployment lines, teachers out of our classrooms, construction workers off our job sites, and cops off our streets. Our men and women fighting overseas shouldn’t have to fight for jobs when they come home — or for politicians to fight for them only when it won’t cost their wealthy campaign funders.
Do not be fooled
"This veterans jobs bill is just the kind of legislation that Republicans have been calling for."
- Washington Republicans have repeatedly been given the chance to support jobs for our teachers, construction workers, and even veterans. Every time, they chose millionaires instead.
- Even they admit the reason why they support this bill is that they don’t have to choose it over tax giveaways for millionaires.
- Here’s the real story: right before Veterans Day, they’ve been backed into a corner — it had to come to this before they’d even think about helping the President put any American back to work.
- Let’s be clear: the goal of these Republican bills isn’t to create jobs — they’re meant to undo the common sense protections that protect us all and to let big corporations off the hook for cutting corners on our health and safety.
- Actually, Washington Republicans have voted to keep two million Americans jobless, lay off hundreds of thousands more, and kill up to 7 million jobs in the first half of this year alone.
- Meanwhile, they keep pushing proposals that economists say won’t create jobs — and could even send our economy back into a recession.
"It is false that Republicans have passed jobs bills in the House, but Democrats are blocking them."
It Is Important that You Know The Following
- The President’s veterans jobs plan that faces a vote in the Senate is the VOW to Hire Heroes Act, which will offer companies new and additional tax incentives to hire veterans, including veterans who were wounded in war.
- The VOW to Hire Heroes Act is just the latest part of President Obama’s focus on veterans since the day he took office. Under his leadership, the Obama Administration got the private sector to pledge to hire or train 100,000 veterans or military spouses by the end of 2013; hired over 70,000 veterans in 2010 alone; helped almost 30,000 homeless veterans move into permanent housing; and greatly expanded health care for women and disabled veterans.
- Right now, one million veterans are out of work and in need of good jobs. For state-by-state unemployment statistics on veterans, please click here.
- Hiring veterans isn’t just a matter of national pride — it makes good financial sense for businesses looking for a proven source of highly-trained peak performers.
- In the past four years, Democratic leaders in Congress have passed a new GI bill to help 300,000 veterans go to college, gave businesses a tax credit for hiring out-of-work veterans, and expanded veterans’ health care by 70%.
- By contrast, in the past year alone Republicans have voted to keep housing assistance from 10,000 homeless veterans and have proposed to end the VA health system as we know it. They’ve even refused to disavow people in the crowd at a GOP primary debate who booed a soldier in the United States Army.
