Introducing Ann Bennett For Harris County Tax Assessor Collector/Voter Registrar

December 4, 2011 By Egberto Willies

AnnBennetAnn Harris Bennett has officially entered the primaries for the Harris County Tax Assessor Collector/Voter Registrar. Visit her website her Facebook page here.

Ann Bennett was born in a small East Texas town called Timpson, Texas. She spent the majority of her childhood in Corpus Christi, Texas where her dad worked as a Longshoreman. She graduated from the Corpus Christi Independent School District.

She is a 5th generation Texan and 38 year resident of Houston, Harris County, Texas. She attended Texas Southern University in the School of Journalism and Communications while working and interning at local newspapers, radio, and a local television station in sales and programming.

Her legal, administrative, and research skills and experience:

  • 15 years Harris County Employee
  • 14 ½ years in Civil District Court Administration
  • 12 years as Legal Secretary in Plaintiff and Defense law firms
  • 12 ½ years research expert in Spanish and Mexican Land Grants
  • Democratic Nominee for Harris County Clerk 2010 General Election
  • Texas Democratic Women of Harris County Metro Area “2011 Women Making History Award”
  • She us a sustaining Member of Harris County Democratic Party

  • Why Ann Bennet is running for elective office in her own words:

I felt compelled to enter this race because I passionately believe we need to restore transparency, accountability, and integrity to the voter registration process.  The office of Tax Assessor Collector and Voter Registrar is one of those County Administrative Offices that most of us only think about when we’re waiting in a long line to pay fees on automobile license tags or property taxes.

In reality, the tax watchdog function of the office is incredibly important to the economic success of our region. But the office also oversees voter registration. And it’s no secret that past holders of this office have been entangled in scandalous lawsuits calling into question the integrity of our voter registration process.

It’s been over fifty years since passage of the Voting Rights Act and yet, from voter registration irregularities to illegal redistricting plans, we too often continue to see examples of the need for the legal protections afforded under the Voting Rights Act. While I could not be more thankful for those protections, I intend to end the questionable practices of the past and restore faith among Harris County voters in the voter registration process. The voter registration process should be simple, secure, accessible and most of all, it should never leave citizens questioning its integrity.

With me as your Tax Assessor Collector/Voter Registrar, all Harris County residents will receive the efficiency and integrity they deserve.
