Civil Rights Icon Rev William A. Lawson & NAACP’s Howard Jefferson Endorse Council Member Jolanda “Jo” Jones

December 7, 2011 By Egberto Willies

imageHOUSTON (Dec. 7, 2011) – Reverend William A. “Bill” Lawson, founding pastor of Houston’s historic Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church and Howard Jefferson, NAACP national board member, have endorsed Council Member Jolanda “Jo” Jones for re-election to Houston City Council At-Large Position 5.

“I am endorsing Council Member Jolanda Jones for re-election because of her strong commitment to serving as a voice for those that have no seat at the table in important policy decisions at city hall,” said Reverend Lawson.

“I support Council Member Jones because she has demonstrated that she will take a stand on issues and is not afraid to advocate for what she believes is right for Houston,” said Howard Jefferson.

Council Member Jones fought to protect the property rights of people living in historic neighborhoods and to protect residents living in the flood plain from unfair city ordinances. She stood up for female firefighters that were being discriminated against and has pushed for fair and equal treatment for all Houstonians. She raised questions about the cost of the drainage fee for homeowners and continues to serve as a watchdog of city policies and spending. She has worked to save millions for taxpayers by fighting waste in the city’s housing department.

“I am deeply honored to have these endorsements. I am committed to helping all Houstonians navigate the red tape of city hall and will continue to work with the mayor and my colleagues on city council as an advocate for my constituents,” said Council Member Jones.
