Want To Stimulate The Economy? Raise The Minimum Wage by Marc Croes

January 5, 2012 By Egberto Willies

Marc Croes, membership chairman of the Kingwood Area Democrats writes this well researched piece on what our economy needs to get on track. Marc’s researched observation would definitely have an impact on our economy. Sadly the politics makes it very unlikely. That said, if we really forced our politicians to govern, it would be a reality.

I did not see any data cited by Marc to support his position. Nor does he state what that wage should be. And who is the GREAT DECIDER of that?

A simple search of various economic studies on this subject will cause most readers to conclude that younger inexperienced workers are often displaced/eliminated from the work force as minimum wage levels are increased. Just look at the teen unemployment rates over time.

As an example, say you and I own a sandwich shop, rather than training young workers (who need training because they know very little about business) we would naturally hire an experienced worker who can be more productive immediately as minimum wage levels are increased. Maybe we own 100 sandwich shops, same issue.

I must ask this question though: Do YOU and your family really want the federal government to be: A) MORE involved in your life, or B) LESS involved? Where does it stop? Ask your friends from the left and the right.

Back to the sandwich shop, I believe that WE should decide what WE can afford to pay to stay in business. Who else really knows best? Can we really raise the price of the sandwich from $5.00 to $6.00 to cover the increased costs mandated by the Federal Government?

And lastly who in the Federal, State or Local Government do you actually trust to TELL you what to do AND how can that person or department somehow know better than you what is good for you?

I believe that we, as individuals, can best decide what is in our best interests and that includes where we choose to work given our skill levels, abilities and willingness to hustle. If you want to make more money work harder than the next person, improve your skills, stay positive and make a difference for someone everyday.
