Republican politicians don’t want good news on jobs — they’d rather see Obama fail than put Americans back to work.

January 9, 2012 By Egberto Willies

imageIt’s tough out there. Americans would love to hear some good news on jobs right now. We have a long road back, but our economy created 2 million new jobs last year alone. The Republican response? Attack the President and the policies that helped create those jobs. Republican politicians don’t want any news that could help the President — even if it means more Americans are getting back to work. Politicians who want their political opponents to lose more than they want Americans to succeed have no business leading America.

SOME SAY: "Obama failed on jobs. It’s time for a president who understands how the economy works."

  • Actually, President Obama and the American people created 2 million new jobs last year, making it the best year for job creation since 2005. And the President’s American Jobs Act would create 2 million more jobs.
  • Just before Obama came into office, we were dealing with the worst recession since the Great Depression. We can’t go back to the policies that caused the financial crisis that Obama inherited and the economic mess we’re still dealing with today.
  • Our economy works best when we value working families, everyone plays by the rules, and everyone pays their fair share.

SOME SAY: "Obama doesn’t deserve credit for any of the good jobs news."

  • The American people deserve credit and that’s who this President’s policies have supported — despite political opponents who’ve tried to cut millions of American jobs at the same time.
  • We should be putting money in the pockets of the real job creators: regular Americans whose spending keeps our businesses thriving and hiring. That’s what Obama is doing.
  • We can keep our economy going in the right direction — but we need leaders who want Americans to succeed more than they want the President to fail.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Our economy added 200,000 new private sector jobs last month and 1.9 million new jobs in 2011, making last year the best year for jobs growth since 2005. In contrast, the economy that President Obama inherited was losing nearly a million jobs each month just before he took office.
  • Last year alone, Washington Republicans tried to kill over 7 million jobs.
  • They also repeatedly chose millionaires over jobs for our teachers, construction workers, and even veterans, and kept trying to lay off Americans who keep our country running.
  • All the GOP hopefuls for president want to give the richest 1% even bigger giveaways — but we’ve tried "trickle down" economics and it doesn’t create jobs.
  • Half of Americans believe that Republicans are intentionally stalling efforts to jumpstart the economy to ensure President Obama isn’t re-elected. Even Mike Huckabee admits that Republicans are "more interested in just defeating Obama than they are in rebuilding America."
