Romney’s Regular Voter Problem

imageDespite growing up in Michigan and heavily outspending his opponents, Mitt Romney won ugly in the Michigan primary. After struggling to connect with regular voters, Romney won among six-figure earners and lost with everyone else.

We need leaders who’ll fight for working Americans, not just those living off their wealth.Romney wanted to let Michigan’s working families fail and he’s still demanding more tax giveaways for millionaires like him.

It’s no wonder Romney only won among six-figure earners and lost with everyone else — even in his home state of Michigan. In state after state, Romney does worse with voters the closer they get to the average American income.Romney’s got a regular voter problem: they’re on to him and what he stands for, and they’re not buying it.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • In the GOP primaries, Mitt Romney’s cleaning up with the richest voters but struggling with regular Americans — doing worse with voters the closer they get to the average American income (based on data from not just MI and AZ, but also IA, NH, SC, FL, and NV).
  • Regardless of their income, gender, party affiliation, geographic region, or any other demographic category studied, most Americans agree Mitt Romney favors the rich over the middle class.
  • Mitt Romney is failing to impress regular voters, including blue collar workers and veterans. And over half of Americans agree that the more they learn about Romney, the less they like him.
  • He claims that he’s "proposing no tax cuts for the rich," but his $10.7 trillion tax plan would overwhelmingly go to a tiny number of the wealthiest few — including himself — while cutting Social Security and Medicare benefits that working Americans have paid for.

In the two years for which he’s released his tax return, Romney paid an average tax rate of 14 percent on the money he made off money — lower than millions of middle-class Americans pay on the earnings they make from working in a job.
