I have heard from many Republicans since the close of the last legislature tell me they are voting Democratic inasmuch as they are Republicans. To be honest most do not intend to become Democrats but more likely independents.
Over the last few weeks I have seen a change. More are actually joining the Democratic fold. This is not at all shocking. Our electoral process requires a political umbrella to get anything done. While independence sound fine in theory it does not work in practice. One must join a party that fits ones values and ensure the party lives up to its values. Where necessary, one must drag the party back to its values.
The current Democratic Party can be summarized with one phrase.
MAKING BETTER LIVES FOR ALL. Not Just the Privileged Few
If that is what you are all about then you are implicitly a Democrat. When our friend in the article below could no longer stomach the evil perpetrated by her party she ensured her morality reigned, she quit. Her good deeds will be rewarded. Willful ignorance or appeasement for a party does your city, your state, your country no good. Most importantly, it is a cancer on your soul.
Fikac: GOP cuts were too much for legislative staffer
AUSTIN – It’s not often that the resignation of a part-time legislative staffer makes a splash, but it’s not often that an aide writes a letter like Allison Catalano did.
Catalano, 26, went to work for state Rep. Myra Crownover, R-Denton, in August after graduating from the University of North Texas. She started as an unpaid intern and became a paid staffer.
It was a promising start to what she calls her "first ‘big girl’ job after graduation."
Then she saw something she couldn’t stomach – GOP-led cuts and restrictions in family planning programs "announced as a victory." That’s where her letter came in.
After thanking Crownover for the opportunity to work for her, Catalano wrote, "Your decision to cut the funding of clinics that provide free and low-cost health care to over 100,000 low-income Texas women is shameful. … I cannot in good conscience continue to be associated with you or a Legislature that would so unabashedly and unapologetically belittle the hard-fought rights of women. … Trampling the rights of women in an effort to grandstand against the federal government is simply wrong and I cannot be a part of it."
The letter rated a story in the Austin Chronicle and led to a speaking slot at an Austin rally that featured Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and daughter of the late Democratic former Gov. Ann Richards.
GOP leaders targeted Planned Parenthood by excluding clinics from the Medicaid Women‘s Health Program if they’re affiliated with abortion providers, even though the clinics don’t offer abortions. The decision means the loss of federal funding. The state also cut $73.6 million from another family planning program.
The smartly dressed (this becomes relevant) Catalano told the crowd that she’d always dreamed of a career in public service but found herself at a decision point: "I could continue my career at the Capitol and resign myself to working against the interests of women’s health, or I could simply resign."
Then came a fiery speech from Rep. Dawnna Dukes, D-Austin, who, before leaving the stage, put Catalano in the spotlight once again with a reference to her job situation – and her fashion sense: "Allison, I really like your shoes. Please present your résumé to my office."
Catalano said Friday, "It is in the mail."
