With freedom comes responsibility. Death of Libyan ambassador a tragic example.

September 12, 2012 By Egberto Willies

Sorry, there was a YouTube error.

imageWe are all saddened by the assassination of US Ambassador to Libya J. Christopher Stevens and the other American patriots. While all blame must go to the thugs and terrorists that effected the murders those that have abused or misused their freedom are indirectly responsible for these murders as well. They have blood on their hands.

There have been mobs at US embassies in both Egypt and Libya. The action by those who killed the ambassador seemed more opportunist than out of rage for some assault on their religion. However we all know that many times groups of this type are simply waiting for cover to perpetrate their bad deeds for some other cause.

The pretext for the mob’s action was

The spark for the protests in Libya and Egypt was an obscure movie made in the United States by a California filmmaker who calls Islam a "cancer." Video excerpts posted on YouTube depict Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a madman in an overtly ridiculing way, showing him having sex and calling for massacres.

President Obama condemned the attack.

"I strongly condemn the outrageous attack on our diplomatic facility in Benghazi," Obama said, adding the four Americans "exemplified America’s commitment to freedom, justice, and partnership with nations and people around the globe."

The interim president of Libya apologized and promised justice.

Libya’s interim president, Mohammed el-Megarif, apologized to the United States for the attack, which he described as "cowardly." Speaking to reporters, he offered his condolences on the death of the four Americans and vowed to bring the culprits to justice and maintain his country’s close relations with the United States.

The three Americans killed with Stevens were security guards, he said.

"We extend our apology to America, the American people and the whole world," el-Megarif said.

Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney immediately attempted to use this incident for political gain before the facts were even in and for that he is taking blow back from all sides.

Huffington Post

Many members of the media reacted with puzzlement and criticism to Mitt Romney’s continuing criticism of the White House response to the deadly attacks in Libya and Egypt.

The Romney campaign drew fire on Wednesday morning for issuing a blistering statement condemning the American embassy in Egypt for speaking against an incendiary anti-Muslim film, even though the embassy made the statement before any attacks had taken place. NBC’s Chuck Todd, for instance, called the statement "irresponsible" and a "bad mistake."

I submitted the following CNN iReport with my thoughts with the expectation of stimulating a discussion on this issue. Many have sometimes misused our free speech. What purpose does it serve to denigrate a religion when we know there are those who would use said denigration as a catalyst for violence. There is precedence that this unnecessary provocation has caused the deaths of many. Just last year the infamous Florida Koran burning resulted in violence and the deaths of many in Afghanistan.

Hate has no redeeming values. Unfortunately even in our Presidential campaign we see the underpinnings of hate in many of the narratives with the expectation of moving people on emotions and not policies.

Here, let me write Mitt’s apology for him. “Today I join President Obama in condemning this act of outright murder of brave Americans on foreign soil. Separately, I apologize to the President, his administration, and to the American people for my hasty remarks that came when the situation on the ground was still fluid and precarious. As Americans, we value Freedom of Speech among our highest ideals, and understand that with that speech comes great responsibility. Therefore, I take personal responsibility, unlike those zealots who use their disagreements with the free expression of others as an excuse for wanton destruction and murder.”
