On Tuesday September 11th, 2012 between 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM, a fundraiser was held for President Obama at The Gite Gallery located at 2024 East Alabama Street in Houston, Texas. Owner Lloyd Gite was kind enough to have his gallery used for the event.

The event was organized by Cisselon Nichols Hurd using her vast organizational network. She put the entire event together in a couple of weeks.

The Host Committee she put together along with her network ensured that there was an overflowing crowd. Whereas a $10,000 bounty was expected, instead $27,500+ was the running donations by 8:00 PM. There was a promise by another donor to match whatever the take was. As such the president’s campaign will get north of $55,000 from this local Houston fundraiser.

While the event was a fundraiser, it was also an informational meeting. Voter registration was discussed. Community engagement was discussed. Most importantly there was a lot of mutual encouragement to ensure the necessary work to re-elect President Obama would be done. Moreover it was noted that inasmuch as this was a “President Obama” event that it was important that down ballot progressive Democrats were supported and voted for as well.
