There are many Republicans out there that do not believe the junk policy they are putting out there, the junk policies that are harming middle class Americans. These are the Republicans that slip up and say what they really believe. My mother always told me it is difficult to lie continuously without getting caught.
In a Thursday morning interview, Republican Governor Kasich said he supported civil unions. By that afternoon his spokesperson said he used the term loosely. In a statement to BuzzFeed the spokesperson said:
"He may have used the term ‘civil union’ loosely in this instance," Kasich spokesperson Rob Nichols said in a statement sent to BuzzFeed.
"The governor’s position is unchanged. He opposes gay marriage and opposes changing Ohio’s Constitution to allow for civil unions," said Nichols. "He’s opposed to discrimination against any Ohioan and, while he may have used the term ‘civil union’ loosely in this instance, he recognizes the existing rights of Ohioans to enter into private contracts to manage their personal property and health care issues."
This happens frequently in Republican politics. Rand Paul supported a bill that denied women reproductive rights, and then took most of the implications of said bill back on CNN. Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner came out in support of full background checks before taking it back. Mitt Romney came out against the Blunt Amendment before he realized he supported the Blunt Amendment.
Rachel Maddow did a great job in the piece below summarizing the intransigence of these Republicans to their party’s beliefs and the prompt backtrack.
Conservatism is a valid ideology if the people honestly wanted to live under said policies. The Conservative ideology in America was based on the supposed desire for low taxes, a Randian approach to social programs, and basically a patriarchal society where everyone knows their place.
Unfortunately, blacks wanted equal access to the society. Unfortunately women wanted the right to vote. Unfortunately gays want the same right to marry as heterosexuals. Unfortunately old people want an income in their later years. Unfortunately old folks want healthcare when no for Profit Company will sell them health insurance. Unfortunately women want the right to say no and control their own bodies. Unfortunately most people want clean water and safe food. Unfortunately most people want good, well paid teachers. Unfortunately people want good and safe road and bridges.
You get the point. Most of those wants are only efficiently offered by government, we the people collectively. This is where ideology clashes with reality. Only the wealthy can afford to believe in small government. For many of these requirements, profit to the companies that would otherwise provide these services is nothing but a tax. The private sector efficiency myth is a necessary lie to have a few profits from the many. The rights that many want can only be enforced by a strong government (we the people). Absent a strong government we get strong unelected corporate entities that ultimately rule the masses.
Today’s Conservatism promoted by Republicans has failed because the wants of Americans cannot be met by said ideology. Every intelligent Republican knows that. It is for that reason that during the election Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney lied about the President cutting Medicare, while they promised to restore the cuts (cuts were really saving from overpriced providers). It is for this reason that under every Republican President, while they towed the line mostly on big tax cuts, they were never able to shrink government accordingly. In fact they all grew government. It is for this reason why in the Senate where senators are elected at large, the Paul Ryan budget was voted down by many Republican Senators.
Conservative policies depend on having Americans look the other way while they are being pilfered by the few. How is this done? Demonize a president that attempts middle class centric change at every turn. Purchase the mainstream media and control its output. Create think tanks and research organization to distribute false information that seems valid. Divide the electorate on social issues that have nothing to do with economic policies. The problem for Republicans is that smoke and mirrors work for just so long. Reality has begun to infect the public at large.
