I want to give my condolences to the family and friend of those that have died. I also want to give my most sincere sense of sorrow and hope to the injured.
This morning as usual I checked my most important sources of information, The New York Times, Huffington Post, and Addicting Info. I had not yet looked at my Facebook feed as I knew it would be filled with the Boston bombing montage and I am completely bombed out on the constant and repetitive non-information.
I was pleasantly surprised by a piece written by Addicting Info’s Lorraine Devon Wilke titled “Patton Oswalt’s Facebook Post After Boston Bombing Strikes A Nerve, Goes Viral On Social Media”. I will be honest; I did not even know I knew who Patton Oswalt was of course until I saw the picture associated with the name. I am not sure if that makes me a prude. I do know that I simply loved his message.
Here’s what Oswalt had to say:
Boston. F*cking horrible.
I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, "Well, I’ve had it with humanity."
But I was wrong. I don’t know what’s going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.
But here’s what I DO know. If it’s one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we’re lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they’re pointed towards darkness.
But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We’d have eaten ourselves alive long ago.
So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, "The good outnumber you, and we always will."
Whenever we see evil or see the purveyors of evil, whether they are terrorists, politicians, lobbyists, corporatists, and others, we should remember that most of our friends, neighbors, and citizens at large are mostly good people. If we remember that, irrespective of petty differences that in the aggregate are but a blip, we would acknowledge that most folks want all that is good for their friends and families. The reality is that even many politicians, lobbyists, and corporations want to do good by all and it is incumbent upon us to bring out their better angels.
