Republican Senator’s Lie Destroys A Mother’s Faith

April 22, 2013 By Egberto Willies

Politicians generally tell many tales bordering on untruths. They however find plausible technicalities to justify their tale not being categorized as a lie.

Evidently Republican Senator Jeff Flake did not get the memo. According to ThinkProgress after first responding to Caren Teves’, who lost her son during the Aurora shooting, with a form letter, he sent her the following personalized letter.

[ThinkProgress]

Shortly before the a crucial Senate vote to expand background checks in gun transactions, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) sent a letter to the mother of a shooting victim claiming that he was “truly sorry” for her son’s death and that “strengthening background checks is something we agree on.” A few days later, he voted to kill the background checks bill.

Senator Flake lied claiming that he voted against the bill because it would expand background checks far beyond commercial sales to include almost all private transfers including between friends and neighbors. This is a bald-faced lie.

Unfortunately the new brand of Right Wing Tea Party Republicans have thrown even the semblance of truth out the window on the vast majority of issues that affect Americans in general and middle class America specifically. This was done with a complete socio political misinformation structure that was willed into existence partially by the The Powell Memo (Powell Manifesto). Powell was a corporate lawyer that served on the board of 11 corporations and was subsequently confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice under Richard Nixon in 1971. According to Reclaim Democracy

[Reclaim Democracy!]

Though Powell’s memo was not the sole influence, the Chamber and corporate activists took his advice to heart and began building a powerful array of institutions designed to shift public attitudes and beliefs over the course of years and decades. The memo influenced or inspired the creation of the Heritage Foundation, the Manhattan Institute, the Cato Institute, Citizens for a Sound Economy, Accuracy in Academe, and other powerful organizations. Their long-term focus began paying off handsomely in the 1980s, in coordination with the Reagan Administration’s “hands-off business” philosophy.

In effect the Corporate Industrial Complex created several think tanks to give the many lies of their Right Wing allies a semblance of objectivity. Data from any organization formed specifically to promote an ideology (in this case a corporatist ideology) where data on guns, the economy, and every aspect of living is often corrupted, can never be assumed correct, factual, or actionable.
