This Dallas teacher posed nude for Playboy. Should she lose her job? In a perfect world it should not matter. However in a hypocritically puritanical state like Texas it probably will matter for one main reason. Many parents in Texas’ suburbs generally forget their past and become rather “Conservative” in their social stances. Actually most of this is generally peer pressure among parents.
DallasNews reports that,
A Dallas ISD teacher who had posed nude for Playboy’s website has caused a stir with students and at least one parent, who questioned whether she should be in the classroom.
Cristy Nicole Deweese — who was “Coed of the Month” in February 2011 — is a first-year teacher at Rosie M. Collins Sorrells School of Education and Social Services at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center. The magnet high school serves students in grades nine through 12.
Deweese is 21, teaches Spanish and goes by the name Cristy Nicole in Playboy’s online photos and videos.
The district is aware of the concerns, DISD spokesman Jon Dahlander said Friday. “This is a personnel matter, and it will not be discussed.”
The only question that should matter is whether this young woman is a good Spanish teacher or not. This could be a learning experience for female students and male students. It shows the exploitative nature in which women are treated. This Dallas teacher posed nude several years ago for “extra cash” according to her video. Her video implies she had a full ride to college yet ‘modeled’ for that vanity dollar. The tonality of the video showed a distinct exploitation of her naïve youthfulness. The lesson is that it is hard to run from anything in one’s past and as such must be careful.

It is obvious that this teacher posed nude without thinking about the consequences. She noted being videoed. She stated she wanted to be a Spanish teacher. She stated she wanted to teach at a high school. She was intelligent and aware of what was required to teach at a high school. Yet this teacher posed nude without it ever occurring to her that this would video would be out for all to see.

It is sad to me that a person can do something careless in youth and it can ruin their livelihood for ever. But if the parent (or parents) of students are really upset about this, no blame or action should be taken against the teacher. The parent(s) have a lot of explaining to do as to WHY or HOW they found this video in the first place, and if its so offensive, WHY did they look at it or watch it. I myself do not like pornography, so I never would have found out that my kids teacher (who used a whole different name) was ever involved. If she is a great teacher leave her alone and take personal responsibility for your actions.
I think that it is funny that I would have a problem with this. But what my mind conjures up, is a young lady, just becoming adult, who should be fully aware that things on the fringe of societal acceptance, are very often poisonous for a career in teaching…at least at the high school level and below. This little piece of info is constantly being offered up through the media. There is no secret, here. But that is not the biggest problem.
Contrary to fashionable opinion, subject matter constitutes only part of what students learn from teachers. Far more than that, behavior, attitudes, thought patterns and interpretive constructs play an enormous role in the classroom. I don’t know that I could fault any parents for assuming that Ms. Deweese’s already demonstrated attitude toward propriety, will have a negative effect on the conglomerate package.
By the way, I haven’t even seen the photos!
