Why should one be fearful of embracing working poor and working middle class centric policies? Why would a candidate play on the other party’s narrative if deep within you know you have the moral narrative? Two politicians seem to be realizing that making the effort to connect to the masses on their own narrative is the way to victory.
Earlier this week Clay Aiken announced he was running for Congress. He is challenging Congresswoman Renne Ellmers (R-NC) in North Carolina’s 2nd district. It is a fairly Republican district. One would expect Clay Aiken to run away from the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). He has not. In fact he has adopted a very populous tone with southern sensibilities.
Charlie Crist took it a step further. Charlie Crist was on the Daily Rundown today that likely shocked everyone who has watched Democrats cower when asked about a progressive agenda, let alone an association with President Obama.
Charlie Crist came out swinging. Chuck Todd in his every more apparent appeasement of the Right, attempted to give Governor Rick Scott credit for Florida’s unemployment rate drop. Charlie Crist would have none of it. He boomeranged Rick Scott Obama embrace attack by embracing it. Christ said categorically that the improvement was a result of President Obama’s stimulus. He even said he was grateful to the President during the interview.
But it would get better. Charlie Crist channeled Congressman Alan Grayson. “About a million of my fellow Floridians are not getting health care today.” Charlie Crist said. “And I am told by friends at SIEU that means that six people in Florida die every day as a result of that. Every day.” When Chuck Todd came to the defense of Rick Scott by claiming that factual statement was a “tough allegation,” Charlie Crist did not back down.
“That’s right,” Charlie Crist said. “If people are sick, and they aren’t getting health care, what happens? They usually get sicker, or they die. … In addition to it, it is economically stupid.”
Charlie Crist shows he has a spine.
Democrats will not win in 2014 trying to be Blue Dogs. They will win by telling Americans why they deserve to be elected. They will win by adopting policies Americans want and narrative they define, not one defined for them by the Right.
