Jon Stewart’s take on football player Michael Sam coming out as gay (VIDEO)

Jon Stewart Michael Sam

Jon Stewart had a funny but rather telling piece on Michael Sam on his Daily Show. It is worth watching. Jon Stewart first dispels the fallacy of gays not being tough.

“Who is this gay football player,” Jon Stewart said. “Probably a kicker. Am I right, gay kicker? Not like a real player.”

Jon Stewart hits the idiocy of Michael Sam being a problem for the NFL.

A video then plays that described Michael Sam as a 6’ 2” 260 lb. University of Missouri defensive lineman. He led the SEC in sacks last year. He was the SEC defensive player of the year. He was the best defensive player in the best conference in football.

This shocks Jon Stewart. He comes to an epiphany. “It’s as though sexual orientation has nothing to do with physical strength.”

Jon Stewart was surprised that Michael Sam had told his coach and teammates since August and they kept the ‘secret’. He lamented. “College has change a lot since I was in college.”

After showing a clip of a University of Missouri tweet of support, Jon Stewart noted. “This goes to show despite what may be the heartland’s reputation; they will welcome anyone, no matter how different, if you are really good at football. … I use to think gayness was a sin against God. I use to think gayness was a sin but then I saw the kid play and then thought I should *** people”.

Jon Stewart then played a clip from homophobic player New Orleans Saints Jonathan Vilma. He was concerned that Michael Sam would look at him in the shower. Stewart tore him apart.

Jon Stewart left the biggest irony to the end. Many claim that Michael Sam’s prospects fell with his announcement. The teams may not want the controversies that surround having a gay player.

“No pro team wants the type of controversy having a gay player is going to cause,” Jon Stewart said. “If he had just been convicted of DUI vehicular manslaughter, or obstruction of justice in connection with a murder, or have been accused of sexual assault, or screamed the N word at a concert, or killed a bunch of dogs and buried them in his f**king yard, you know, NFL material.” He showed all, the NFL player sporting those ‘tenets’ as he spoke. Powerful.
