James Carville appeared on This Week and just about shut down speculation of Republicans picking a far Right candidate like Ted Cruz or a Libertarian like Rand Paul. He believes that they they will pick the most electable person because the party is at a turning point. James Carville said the following.
Fast forward to January 2015, the most likely, not the only scenario is Hilary Clinton is the presumptive Democratic nominee. Everyone is going to have a poll on how they fare in the election against Hilary. They are not going to not nominate somebody because of common core. Trust me.
The Party knows, and I use this word advisedly, that if it loses the 2016 presidential election, the Republican Party as we know it today would be extinct. This would be the sixth out of seven elections that they have lost the popular vote. Republicans want to win this. And they would do … that is going to be the biggest issue in January 2015. I can beat Hilary Clinton. They have to win this election.

James Carville pronouncement may be too little too late. The country has had an irreversible demographic shift. Younger generations are decidedly more Liberal. This is evident in the lightning speed with which the support of marriage equality, marijuana legalization, and other social issue has evolved. The new Paul Ryan budget that decimates the social safety net exacerbates this even more.
Unless the Republican Party makes major modifications to its ideological tenets, it simply cannot win a popular majority. Voter suppression tactics will be futile. It will simply enrage those who remember or learned about the Jim Crow days.
James Carville understands politics better than most. The plausibility that he is giving to an unchanged Republican Party assumes a demoralized electorate. A mobilized electorate will begin voting in their own interest.
