Rep. Dennis Ross got on his high horse to scold constituents who support a higher minimum wage, a living wage. Once again a politician puts his tunnel vision ideology over the reality of pain and suffering of the working poor and the working middle class.
Congressman Dennis Ross (R-FL) is confronted by constituent Shaneeka Rainer who works a full time job at Arby’s for minimum wage. Think Progress reports it as follows.
People like Shaneeka Rainer are often told that they shouldn’t try to get the minimum wage increased because it only really applies to teenagers working entry-level jobs. That indeed may have described Rainer 10 years ago, when he first entered the workforce. But a decade after he got his first job in fast food, Rainer still finds himself working at Arby’s for minimum wage.
In other words, Rainer has worked an entire decade receiving only one raise: when Congress increased the minimum wage in 2007.
And so he showed up at his congressman’s public forum on Tuesday to ask Rep. Dennis Ross (R-FL) to finally give him and millions of other low-income Americans a raise.
When asked if he supports the minimum wage Dennis Ross said no. Most importantly watch the emotional disdain to even consider that it is the right thing to do. He continues to make the absurd and debunked argument that raising the minimum wage hurts the economy,
He asked who would pay for the minimum wage increase. A constituent yelled that he does not mine paying twenty cents more for a hamburger in order for a higher minimum wage, a living wage. Dennis Ross dismisses that constituent sarcastically encouraging him to pay more taxes with his goodwill. Most Americans want a higher minimum wage and are willing to pay for it. They know it is good for all Americans, not just a select few capital hoarders.
Dennis Ross thinks minimum wage for hard work is an American value
At the end of the video snippet Rep. Dennis Ross felt compelled to scold his constituents about American values. He made it seem like working hard for low pay is a cherished American value. Maybe Dennis Ross needs to do a stint in America’s sweatshops; fast food restaurants and many minimum wage jobs. Reality will strike then.
