Jon Stewart is right. Veterans need a declaration of war (VIDEO)

Jon Stewart asks for Operation Enduring Waitlist: A War On Error for our veterans

We profess to love our veterans. We profess that we will support our veterans. After-all they served us well in good faith even if the wars they fought in the name of America were unjust, wrong, or downright illegitimate. Our veterans followed the law. They followed their commands. They served us assuming the tenet of fighting to keep our democracy secured.

Yet while Americans remain engulfed in a media narrative of manufactured scandals there are real scandals that affect our fellow Americans, the poor, veterans, and many others. It is a scandal that VA administrators created secret waiting list to mask the problem of long waits for appointments. It is a bigger scandal that this is not in the news every day. It is a scandal that politicians continue to invest lip service and outrage yet refuse to provide the real resources needed to fund the VA consummate with the wars they authorize.

John Stewart says it best near the end of the segment above. “Here is what disgusts me,” John Stewart said. “Somehow, we as a country are able to ship three hundred thousand troops, half way across the world, in just a few months, to fight a war that costs us two trillion dollars; an amount that did not count against our deficit because we paid for it somehow under the table. Yet for some reason it takes longer than that to get someone hurt in that war needed medical care or reimbursement all while we profess undying love for their service. … It is clear love and respect ain’t getting the job done. So there is really only one way to put our government’s full resources behind anything. If you really want to improve the life of these veterans, I am afraid we have to declare war on them. Congress, write a blank check to fund Operation Enduring Waitlist: A War On Error. Because! If you want Americans to feel shock and awe, you will fix this f$$cking thing.”

Jon Stewart was funny as well as tongue and cheek with his advice. Unfortunately there is some reality to his statement relative to the American psyche. Americans have been conditioned to give war priority over all our social and national economic ills. While we attempt to change that mental disorder, we must use the war moniker to get prompt assistance to our veterans.
