John Stewart calls out government and reporters on the Robert Bergdahl story
Jon Stewart does it again. He shows the news media as well as politicians making a mockery out of people’s lives for an ulterior motive. He shows how the release of Robert Bergdahl from the Taliban went from ‘A Magnificent Wonderful Story’ to a political fiasco.
Jon Stewart shows journalists talking about the Robert Bergdahl story being a good news story. “Across the board this is a magnificent wonderful story,” a reporter says. “Everybody is rejoicing that he is safe and he will get to go back to his loving parents in Idaho,” Jake Tapper said. “But it is a complicated case.”
The complicated part of the case was the exchange of five senior Taliban members for the release of Robert Bergdahl. It gave Republicans a topic, a talking point on which to hyperventilate about negotiating with terrorists. Negotiating with terrorists is something the American government does even as the government claims it does not. Jon Stewart calls them out on it.
Jon Stewart then shows how this one story blew up into a plethora of controversies. Did the president endanger the country by releasing the five Afghanis? Is something the president did in this story an impeachable offense? Was Robert Bergdahl a deserter? Is Robert Bergdahl a traitor? His father speaks learned to speak Pashto and grew a beard for the time his son was gone. Is he a Muslim? Is he out of razors or does he want to continue to look like the Taliban?
It should be evident that these controversies were inspired by the false narrative generating Right Wing that is then adopted by many in the GOP. The sad part about it is how quickly the traditional media picks up these talking points and make everlasting stories that last over times.
Robert Bergdahl could be a deserter. The fact is America should never leave any of its soldiers behind. The five Taliban members that were release would have had to be released after the war under international treaty. Was it not best to exchange them for a captured American?
