Detroit’s Blight Busters
If one listens to the common wisdom on Detroit from the outside, one would believe the city is a lost cause. Being in Detroit with Netroots Nation 2014 told a completely different story.It was evident that that continuous spark necessary to rebuild the city is coming from within. Maybe that is why no one much talks about the plight of Detroit except during extreme situations.
The water shutoffs brought back attention to Detroit. It was evident that even the fight between Detroit citizens and the water department was going to be waged from within.
While walking the exhibit halls at Netroots Nation 2014, I ran into John J. George, Founder and President of Motor City Blight Busters Detroit Inc. John said that his organization is removing homes, trees, illegal dumps, and anything that brings negative energy to the community. Gordon Soderberg who is ex-navy and has disaster experience from his Hurricane Katrina work, brings veterans in to assist in the cleanup along with Blight Busters.
The cleanup and rebuilding of Detroit will occur from within. John, Gordon, and Terrell are doing their part.
