On the weekend of May 17th-18th, 2002, Steve Scalise was a 36-year-old Louisiana State Representative. Six years later, he’d become a United States Congressman. Six years after that, after only three terms, Steve Scalise would become the House Majority Whip, arguably the third most powerful and influential member of the United States House of Representatives.
But on that weekend in May, Scalise was reportedly armed with a microphone at the Landmark Best Western in Metairie and talking about tax policy to an international convention… of white supremacists and neo-Nazis.
How did Steve Scalise respond?
Scalise said it is ridiculous to suggest he was involved with the group, which was created by former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.
“I didn’t know who all of these groups were and I detest any kind of hate group. For anyone to suggest that I was involved with a group like that is insulting and ludicrous,” Scalise said.
How can that be believed when he told Roll Call the following about David Duke?
Another potential candidate, state Rep. Steve Scalise (R), said he embraces many of the same “conservative” views as Duke, but is far more viable.
“The novelty of David Duke has worn off,” said Scalise. “The voters in this district are smart enough to realize that they need to get behind someone who not only believes in the issues they care about, but also can get elected. Duke has proven that he can’t get elected, and that’s the first and most important thing.”
Speaker of the House Congressman John Boehner so far has come out in defense of Steve Scalise.
“More than a decade ago, Representative Scalise made an error in judgment, and he was right to acknowledge it was wrong and inappropriate. Like many of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, I know Steve to be a man of high integrity and good character. He has my full confidence as our Whip, and he will continue to do great and important work for all Americans,” Boehner said in a Tuesday statement.
However the Right Wing Red State Blogger Erick Erickson is having none of it. He said the following.
My problem with Steve Scalise is judgment. He, like much of the Republican leadership, is so focused on putting electability over principle that it trips up his judgment. And this situation with Duke is another example of that. It’s roots go deeper to 1999. And, frankly, that it goes back so far is why it is hard to believe he did not know about the 2002 group.
… if Scalise was the conservative his spokesmen would have us believe, there is no doubt in my mind he’d be boxing up his office today.
The question, ultimately, is will the GOP leadership hold itself to the standards it sets for conservatives and, if not, conservatives headed to Washington might want to think about that before casting a vote for Rep. John Boehner (R-OH)N/A for Speaker
It would not be long before the ex-KKK Wizard/Leader made himself heard. What he said will likely give many Republicans and southern Democrats pause.
Duke told Fusion he has met with Scalise several times, along with other members of Louisiana’s congressional delegation. He believes two close associates — Howie Farrell and Kenny Knight — invited Scalise to speak at the conference. …
Overall, Duke was rather flabbergasted by the new focus on Scalise. He said he has hosted both Democratic and Republican legislators at everything from conferences to his children’s birthday parties. He said he has met with Democratic legislators at least 50 times in his political life.
And he delivered a warning to both Republicans and Democrats: Treat Scalise fairly, and don’t try to make political hay out of the situation. Or he said he would be inclined to release a list of names of all the politicians — both Republicans and Democrats — with whom he has ties.
“If Scalise is going to be crucified — if Republicans want to throw Steve Scalise to the woods, then a lot of them better be looking over their shoulders,” Duke said.
In effect David Duke may be Steve Scalise best friend. The fact that there may be sitting Democrats and Republicans who met with David Duke and his folks may just make this current media hyperventilation moot. Southern politics create strange bedfellows.
