Bernie Sanders’ policies are the future of the Democratic Party
Chris Matthews have been off the rails for some time when talking about Bernie Sanders. He has been late in realizing that in fact the Democratic Party has changed and is sprinting away from the tenets of Bill Clinton’s Democratic Leadership Council (DLC).
He attempted to ambush the Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz a few weeks ago.
Chris Matthews attempted to bait the DNC chair into a Socialist vs Democrat debate. She appropriately refused to go there. Unless one could get into an educated discussion it would simply be spun by all the false negative connotations many have attached to the word just like they have to the word Liberal. The DNC chair made her point as to what Democrats stand for and pointed out that all the Democrats running in general support at least the basic tenets of liberalism and a robust social safety net.
Chris Matthews misled Americans as he incorrectly defined Democratic Socialism as the outdated dictionary definition of socialism. This even though Bernie Sanders has always given Denmark as a relevant template.
“Socialists traditionally believe in government control of the economy,” Chris Matthews said. “Democrats believe in modifying the economy to help people at the bottom, a safety net. But clearly they believe in the market.”
Well, Chris Matthews has been forced to come to the appropriate conclusion given the realities of the polls, the debate, and simple common sense. He appeared on Seth Meyers and made the following statement.
He [Bernie Sanders] is where the party’s headed. And the party is much more left than it was. If you had said socialist four or eight years ago, you would have been blown out of town. You can’t say socialist. Now it doesn’t bother anybody. Because they don’t think the system is straight right now. And in fact if you had talked about the rich people would say ‘oh that is class politics, you can’t do that.’ Nobody said that this time because they know its right. Because of the numbers. People are getting hurt.
Well, Chris Matthews is late to the game. Better late than never.
