Ted Cruz explains why his Canadian birth does not disqualify him from the presidency

Birthirism is now striking the GOP. Ironically it is one of their own that is bringing up the issue. Donald Trump is pushing this Ted Cruz birther story into the forefront.

Yesterday Ted Cruz responded in a tongue and cheek manner. Recently he has taken the question more seriously. One must remember that during the times where Donald Trump and the Right Wing had been attacking President Obama about his birth certificate, Cruz did not mount a staunch defense even as he is well versed on the law.

The ironic thing is that President Obama was born in the U.S. of an American mother and a Kenyan father. Ted Cruz was born on foreign soil, Canada, of an American mother and a Cuban father.

Cruz responded to a reporter’s question about whether he is qualified to be president head on.

“Look as a legal matter, the question is quite straightforward in settled law that the child of a U.S. citizen born abroad is a natural born citizen,” Ted Cruz said. “People will continue to make political noise about it. But as a legal matter it is quite straightforward. I would note that it has occurred many times in history. John McCain was born in Panama but he was a natural born citizen because his parents were U.S. citizens. George Romney, Mitt’s dad, was born in Mexico when his parents were Mormon missionaries. But he was a natural born citizen because his parents were citizens. And actually Barry Goldwater was born in Arizona before Arizona was a state. And yet he was a natural born citizen because his parents were citizens. As a legal matter the question is quite straightforward.”

Ted Cruz then tried to change the conversation. He wanted to talk about the “real issues.’ It is amazing when the shoe is on the other foot how quickly those that foment hate and dissention attempt to deflect.

To be clear. Ted Cruz is a natural born citizen even though he was born in Canada. While it is silly that we are spending time on this issue, we must. Just maybe if all these guys realize not only that they are living in glass houses, not only that their policies are flawed, and that they will be called out and confronted for their lies, they will cleanup their behavior. One can hope.
