Steven Orozco explains being an ally in the movement
Steven Orozco participated on a panel held by the Lone Star College Center for Civic Engagement. The title of the panel was “Making History by Acting in the Moment: Race in America.” Orozco was the local panelist. He is working on his degree in history.
Steven Orozco discusses being an ally to Black Lives Matter, what it has meant to him, and how he got there. Orozco spoke about the impact the murder of many innocent black men had on him — Sean Bell shot over 50 times the night of his wedding, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, among many.
Orozco believes that we are living in a revolution, a revolution that is not being televised but connected via social media. He said the revolution is spilling into the political side (and not the other way around).
Steven pointed out to the crowd that online tools, social media, gives them the ability to participate irrespective of their political passions. It is all about finding one’s activism niche.
Orozco gave examples of how he used social media to get engaged into local actions that most of the times would have gone unnoticed. He gave examples of how this type of networking worked with their justice movement for Sandra Bland.
