Alabama Governor Robert Bentley says he won’t resign

Anti-gay moralist Alabama Governor Robert Bentley was caught in a sex scandal with his chief aideRebekah Mason after a two-year-old tape surfaced. The tape, very sexual in nature, forced the news conference.

AL.com reports the following.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley this afternoon apologized to the people of Alabama for explicit comments he made to Rebekah Mason, his top political adviser.

But Bentley, who has been under siege since former Alabama Law Enforcement Secretary Spencer Collier accused him of having an affair, denied he had been involved in a physical relationship with her.

Bentley said his comments, captured on recordings in 2014, have hurt his family and Mason’s. He called today “a difficult day.”

He repeated over and over that his sins were in the words he used in talking to Mason, nothing more.

When asked to comment on the recordings – part of which include Bentley describing how he liked the come up behind the woman and touch her breasts – he clarified that it was not a “sexual relationship.”

He did not explain the difference.

Bentley said he has not entertained the idea of stepping down. He said the people of Alabama have trusted them and he hopes they will continue to trust him.

This sex scandal is poetic justice. One must remember that this is the governor who vehemently opposed same-sex marriage on moral grounds.

While the legal wrestling continues over gay marriage, lawyers for Gov. Robert Bentley told the U.S. Supreme Court that same-sex marriage is a social experiment that undermines the rights of children.

The governor filed a friend of the court brief Tuesday ahead of April arguments regarding gay marriage.

Bentley’s lawyers said marriage is a natural reality and that same-sex marriage destroys the “rights of children to be connected to their biological parents.”

These Right Wing moralists have caused much harm to their citizens. They have denied them health care. They have restricted the vote. Their states are more dependent on the federal government than states run by enlightened progressives. It is shameful that America continues to elect such flawed characters. The sex scandal isn’t really the issue. That is his business. However the fact that these Right Wingers want to control a woman’s body and enter one’s bedroom is the problem. It is their policies cloaked in a false morality. The sex scandal is just the identification of the hypocrisy.
