Chuck Todd displayed a sense of desperation for a problem he and the rest of the media created in the first place.
Chuck Todd exasperated by Donald Trump's lies
An exasperated Chuck Todd attempted to defend the mainstream media for their creation; a metastasized lying Donald Trump. The media made an unspoken deal with Trump and gave up credibility it could not afford to lose in the process.
No one should be surprised that the press lost control of Donald Trump and his narrative. The media continued doing what it does best, appease those on the Right as it entertains faux scandals and misinformation.
I wrote a piece admonishing Todd in the past titled "Chuck Todd Is The Embodiment Of A Delegitimized Traditional Media" where I detailed Todd and the press' culpability in getting rolled by the Right Wing which effectively give lies plausibility. Later I pointed out in the article titled "Chuck Todd screwed up when he told this whopping truth" explaining part of the reasons guys like Todd do what they do. To be sure, I covered the few times Chuck bucked the trend as well; the piece titled "Chuck Todd does a hit job on Donald Trump" is an example.
In the clip in this post, Mika Brzezinski calls out Trump for lying and said he had failed any test regarding being able to cover him as a legitimate, credible candidate. One should note that Donald Trump used Morning Joe as their propaganda outlet for much of his campaign. In fact, Joe Scarborough defended Trump many times.
Todd added to the panel discourse in an exasperated tone.
"It is sort-of the spread offense of misconception, misperceptions, and lies and all this stuff," Todd said. "There are so many of them. You cover one, and there are six left uncovered. You can't debunk the lies as fast as he is telling them. ... It is actually a brilliant media strategy if you are Trump."
When asked if Trump followers believe he is lying, he gave a two part answer. They discount the lies from Trump, the individual. But they are sending a statement about the ruling class leaving them behind.
Nick Confessore all but confirmed the sentiment.
"Mika, I received a letter from a reader on Friday that said I don't care if he is unqualified," Confessore said. "I am going to vote for him to stick it to people like you."
That sentiment is what makes this election dangerous. In order to stick it to those people perceived as the bad guys, they are willing to vote against their interests. Unfortunately what many of those people fail to realize is that Trump is the embodiment of the people they despise and the people they want to stick it to won't suffer. The average American citizen will.
