Hillary Clinton said the following at a fundraiser recently.
You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. … He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people — now have 11 million. He tweets and retweets their offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric.
Here is Hillary Clinton’s ‘basket of deplorables’ statement
Those are facts. Trump received over 13 million votes. One can easily infer from the empirical data that over half of his supports harbor feelings anathema to today’s prevailing morality. You cannot vote for a Donald Trump given his doubling down on the racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, and Islamaphobic utterances and acts and not bear some responsibility.
Hillary Clinton has since somewhat walked back her statement.
“Last night I was ‘grossly generalistic,’ and that’s never a good idea,” Clinton said in a statement. “I regret saying ‘half’ — that was wrong.” She went on to say that “many of Trump’s supporters are hard-working Americans who just don’t feel like the economy or our political system are working for them.” Clinton said she won’t stop “calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign.”
My thoughts on Clinton’s partially walking back ‘basket of deplorables’
