Reverend Barber summarily called out the White Evangelical Right for their distortion of Christianity which he says is a form of heresy.
Reverend Barber calls out the White Evangelical Right
Reverend Barber on #AMJoy, blew away the facade of the White Evangelical Right distortion of Christianity calling it heresy and theological malpractice. He did not mince his words.
“What we see with the so called Evangelical Right or White Evangelical Right is a form of heresy, a form of theological malpractice,” Reverend Barber said. “I am an evangelical. And evangelicalism in the bible starts with a critique of systems of poverty. It is very easy. Luke chapter 4 verse 18 – ‘The spirit of the Lord is upon me for he has anointed me to preach good news as evangel to the poor’ and then it talks about the broken heart of the sick, the blind, and all those who have been made to feel unacceptable. It is a strange form of theology. It traces all the way back to those who were able to support slavery on Monday but then goes to church on Sunday, where you somehow dismiss all of these issues. You dismiss a candidate that wants to take people’s health care. You say that’s Christian. When he wants to deny living wages you don’t have any critique. And now even with this violence and pathology that’s been alleged towards women, and somehow you suggest that as long as he is right on the Supreme Court, prayer in school, and tax cuts, somehow that is a Christian position. That’s actually theological malpractice that borders on a form of heresy in the 21st century.”
Later on, Reverend Barber reiterated that the issues that the White Evangelical Right are pushing have no theological basis.
“The problem is that in the scriptures justice and health care, living wages and how you treat the least of these, and the poor, and those on the margins — there are two thousand scriptures Joy, that speak to those issues. We have allowed , many times in the media, people to suggest they have a values platform without a critique.”
If anyone wonders why religion is in a steady decline in the United States, wonder no more. Religion is doing it to itself. Many religious leaders specifically on the Right have sold out their people. They keep many of them by using their faith as a weapon, as a chain as they pilfer them all. Religion in many instances has become an extension of unfettered capitalism. It is now another tool the plutocracy used to maintain its power over otherwise good and decent people who have been led astray.
