Donald Trump went completely off the rails as he turned the Al Smith benefit dinner speech into a political attack speech on Hillary Clinton. When a mostly Republican crowd of plutocrats boo you, it is evidenced one has crossed the line.
The annual dinner is a fundraiser for the powerful Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Generally, both nominees speak during presidential years.
Trump started with a few self-deprecating jokes. In fact, he had some that were outright funny.
“Michelle Obama gives a speech and everyone loves it, it’s fantastic,” Trump said. “They think she’s absolutely great. My wife Melania gives the exact same speech and people get on her case.”
After making the joke, Trump said he would be in trouble with his wife.
But soon after he went off the rails. He called her at one point corrupt. This elicited boos from the entire audience.
It was clear that Donald Trump intended to use this venue to continue his political attacks.
