It is sad but no longer unbelievable how some would fall prey to being pawns of the very candidate or administration that would do harm to their friends and families. The Muslim woman in this video presents a dangerous and false narrative.
Muslim woman offers a false narrative
Muslim writer and Trump supporter Asra Nomani appeared on MSNBC and implicitly blamed folks in the religion for the hate perpetrated against them. Asra wrote an opinion piece in the Washington Post titled "I’m a Muslim, a woman, and an immigrant. I voted for Trump." in which she said the following.
I have absolutely no fears about being a Muslim in a “Trump America.” The checks and balances in America and our rich history of social justice and civil rights will never allow the fear-mongering that has been attached to candidate Trump’s rhetoric to come to fruition.
MSNBC Host Ayman Mohyeldin asked her a simple question. Did she express fearlessness of Trump's rhetoric because of America's check and balance system or because she is unconcerned about Trump's campaign rhetoric and those he appointed that share the same beliefs?
Instead of answering the question she stated that the sky is not falling and that there are a lot of chicken littles running around. Even as the Trump campaign discusses registering Muslims and providing the Japanese internment as precedence, she does not believe it is a possibility. Maybe she needs to go to a Trump Rally.
Most disturbing is Asra's response when confronted with the fact-based information of Muslim hate crimes increasing as Donald Trump's rhetoric increased. She pretty much said that Muslims are to blame for not discussing it, within the faith. In other words, law-abiding Muslims are responsible for radical Muslims. Christians and Jews are never asked to hold responsibility for crimes committed under those religions.
Blacks, Latinos, Muslims, and other subgroups currently live through the burden of a stereotype they bear quietly irrespective of their behavior. It is unjustified and gives many a false sense of security when defensive actions are taken against the stereotyped.
