(CNN)[Breaking news update at 1:07 p.m. ET] The suspect in the Ohio State University attack ran into a group of pedestrians on a street corner with his vehicle before using a weapon to cut several people, OSU President Dr. Michael Drake said. The assailant used a butcher knife, OSU Police Chief Craig Stone said.
[Breaking news update at 12:35 p.m. ET] Ten people were hospitalized after an attack Monday at Ohio State University, Columbus Fire spokeswoman Rebecca Diehm said. Nine are in stable condition, and one is in critical condition, she said.
The university released a statement after the attack.
“A suspect has been shot and reported deceased,” the university said. “Victim injuries include stab wounds, injury by motor vehicle and other injuries that are being evaluated.”

The campus, home to nearly 60,000 people was on lockdown.
“Run Hide Fight,” the university’s emergency management office tweeted. “Continue to shelter in place.”
“I wasn’t close enough to see any wounds. It definitely shook me up a bit. Never encountered anything like this. Very surprising and very scary”
Heavily armed police and ambulances could be seen on the Columbus campus, where nearly 60,000 students are enrolled.
The FBI, Ohio State police and Columbus police were assisting university police.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich tweeted that the state’s “thoughts and prayers go out to the Ohio State community. Be safe, listen to first responders.”
