I learned over time that one must first communicate to another’s universal values to ensure a path to changing minds. This exchange with a Libertarian who called into my Politics Done Right show is worth a listen. He became open to changing his opinion on government some if not all the way.
Libertarian caller seemed amenable to my narrative
John, my Libertarian listener, called in and asked a loaded question; What are we all entitled to? It was evident where he was going, and I wanted the exchange. I explained that our society set those parameters. I also explained that for society to work, individuals give up some of their individualistic rights.
I reminded John that while most people do not call themselves Progressives or Liberals when asked about their economic and social values, it inevitably skews Progressive.
I later explained why neither Libertarians nor anyone else should fear government if we abide by the tenet that government is ‘we the people.’
