Many Progressives wanted a firebrand activist to take over the DNC. Many supported Keith Ellison for that reason. But after watching the new DNC Chair in action at this event where he articulated Democratic values as he spoke the inconvenient truth about the current GOP and monitoring him over the last few weeks, it is evident he is up to the job.
New DNC Chair Tom Perez articulates Democratic values and slams GOP
The new DNC Chair, Tom Perez, gave a fiery and upbeat speech at the New Jersey Working Families Alliance where he slammed GOP for not caring about people. He did not mince his words.
“I need your help because I do not understand something,” DNC Chairman Tom Perez said. “Donald Trump wants his name around everything, The Trump Tower, Trump Steaks, Trump ties. But when it came to healthcare, he didn’t want Trumpcare. So what do we call it? Do we call it Trumpcare? Do we call it Ryancare? Well, I will tell you my idea. Because you know what it is for anybody who needs their program? ‘I don’t care,’ because they don’t give a sh-t about people. Because you know what? That is what it was about. This program, this repeal, was a massive tax break for the wealthy.”
The lights went out as soon as he said that. But that did not deter the Perez.
“You know what, you can try to silence our light,” Perez continued. “And we will bring your abuses to light. And you know what folks? Trumpcare, Ryancare, I don’t care, it is an age tax. Anyone who’s my age, 50 to 64. It was an age tax. You know what folks. You know what is so important? It does not reflect our values.”
DNC Chairman Tom Perez then articulated the Democratic values one after another with conviction. He was not reading papers or teleprompters. The manner in which he said made it clear it came from his inner-being.
I was concerned, very concerned because the Obama and Clinton establishment wings of the Democratic Party inserted Perez. The possibility that he would stifle the grassroots concerned me. Now I believe if the grassroots stays strong, Perez will allow them to force him, irrespective of the wants of the Obama/Clinton establishment to be appropriately populist, appropriately grassroots.
So, to my fellow Berniacs and my fellow real Progressives, let’s keep our eyes on the ball. We are the leaders of the Left because we are really the spoken soul of what most Americans want.
