Former Congressman David Jolly (R-FL) has a warning for ‘Donald Trump Republicans doing what Donald Trump Republicans do’ in the House that they are unlikely to heed. They can’t help themselves and have no clue on how to govern.
The Congressman is right. We could flip the House in 2018
The Congressman is trying to use his past races as a thermometer that Republicans should watch to prevent the real probability of losing the House. He appeared on Lawrence O’Donnell’s Last Word.
Lawrence told Jolly that a moderate Republican said that if he voted for Trumpcare, it would be the end of his political career.
“This is an exercise in the ego of the president of the United States,” Jolly added. “The are going to win the battle of health care, and they are going to lose the war, a big war. And it might be the 2018 war. You know who else loses here? Karen Handel and Georgia 6th. I was a former special election candidate in a district Obama won twice as a Republican. And the disaster that was happening in Washington, DC almost lost me my race. Listen, Karen Handel needs to realize tonight there is not a single Republican in Washington who cares about her. Because if they did, they wouldn’t be doing what they are doing with health care right now. They are going to create more problems. The biggest political winner tonight in the United States of America is Ossoff and Georgia 6th.”
O’Donnell asked Jolly if the issue, most helpful to Ossoff, is the health care debate.
“I think Republicans are looking at poll numbers saying we haven’t done enough on Obamacare,”Jolly said. “And that does not allow us to turn our Georgia Republicans more. But the reality is, the top line favorability/unfavorability of national Republicans in Congress is that headwind that Karen Handel has to deal with. Trump’s unpopularity does as well. I was elected as a Republican in a Democratic district in the most expensive race in Congressional history at the time. Every time Republicans did something stupid in Washington, it made it harder for me. They are making it harder for Karen Handel. John Ossoff right now, wants Republicans in the Freedom Caucus to keep doing what they are doing. This is Donald Trump Republicans doing what Donald Trump Republicans do, and it is going to flip the House in ’18 if they keep doing it.”
I hope they keep doing it for that particular reason. It could be a Democratic renascence.
