No longer ‘a nation of immigrants?’ Shame on our immigration agency

February 23, 2018 By Egberto Willies

Sorry, there was a YouTube error.

As we continue to hyperventilate over the latest Donald Trump tweet, his minions are busy destroying everything America’s been growing to represent. While it will make Trump’s Right Wing supporters feel accomplished, it will further erode our stature nationally and internationally. Families of immigrants better start engaging.

So what did the Trump engine of evil do this time? The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services changed its mission statement to no longer include a passage describing the country as “a nation of immigrants.”

Immigrants need not apply

According to NBC News,

Tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free need not apply. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services no longer uses language that describes the country as “a nation of immigrants” in its official mission statement, an agency official said Thursday.

The USCIS, the federal agency tasked with granting visas and citizenship, has changed to a new statement that “clearly defines the agency’s role in our country’s lawful immigration system and the commitment we have to the American people,” according to a letter sent to employees by agency director L. Francis Cissna that was obtained by NBC News. …

The previous mission statement said the agency, “secures America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to our customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of our immigration system.”

The new statement now reads:

“U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services administers the nation’s lawful immigration system, safeguarding its integrity and promise by efficiently and fairly adjudicating requests for immigration benefits while protecting Americans, securing the homeland, and honoring our values.”

With so much that we need to do, it is surprising that the administration would carve out the resources to revamp a well-established mission statement. For several months now, many have been asking that we keep our eyes on the ball. The most significant damage effected by Trump occurs behind the scenes like what this post reports. He is the cartoon character getting all the attention as the destructors work in the background.
