The 2nd Amendment is likely the most abused amendment. It’s misuse sanctioned the murder of thousands of Americans every year. Bill Maher’s modification may just be the change that it needs.
“The 2nd Amendment is just words humans made up in a certain moment in history when they felt right,” Bill Maher said. “It’s an amendment, not a commandment. And we can make up new words again. Instead of ‘the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed,’ we could change it to ‘the right of the people to apply for the privilege of possessing non-military style weaponry, as long as you’re not batshit crazy, shall not be infringed.'”
Maher is right. We could create a new amendment to replace the 2nd Amendment. But in this climate, it would be next to impossible to do so. There is a much faster way to attain the same result. As explained here, black & brown people joining the second Amendment Movement may save America faster by giving many a change of heart, the impetus for gun control.
