Republicans in heavy voter suppression mode in Texas

August 22, 2018 By Egberto Willies

Republicans know they are in trouble in Texas. They know Texas is not a Red State. Texas is a non-voting state. It isn’t so by choice. Republicans have ingenious ways of making voting inconvenient. Working people, people who are generally Progressive have a harder time voting. Well, they are trying other techniques as they fear the Blue Wave.

I recently received the following from the Harris County Democratic Party.

Dear Egberto,
We were alerted yesterday that the voter registrations of nearly 4,000 democratic voters had been challenged by Republicans. Taking advantage of a loophole that allows challenged voter registrations to be placed on a suspense list requiring them to either update their address information online or complete a Statement of Residence at their polling place.

Making it harder to vote is one of the oldest tactics in the playbook of Republicans who are right now shaking in their boots at the thought of the expanding electorate and the coming blue wave.

HCDP is working to identify every democratic voter affected and alert them to this change in their registration status. We plan to contact them by mail and phone to ensure they have all the information needed to exercise their right to vote in November and beyond.

We have just 62 days left before Early Voting in Harris County begins, help us make sure we can make contact with everyone affected by these Republican cheap tricks to suppress votes and ensure all eligible voters have their voices heard.

In Solidarity.
Lillie Schechter
Harris County Democratic Party Chair

Democrats and Progressives in Texas will not let this continue to work. We must be proactive now.

  • Check to make sure you are registered and do it often. If you are in Texas check here. Otherwise check here.
  • If you want to volunteer, become a Volunteer Deputy Voter Registrar here.
  • Continue encouraging Texans and all Americans to register. The more Texans we register the better chances of turning Texas Blue. Register more Americans and turn the country blue.
  • Share this widely. That is how we win.
