Why is it that Democrats have a hard time winning all elections in a landslide? I remember going to a conference several years back where I met the author of “The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation,” Drew Westen. His book is less narrational than Thomas Frank’s “What’s the Matter with Kansas? How Conservatives Won the Heart of America.”
The one thing that is true of both books is that Conservatives spoke to the part of the brain centralize the thought. In the process, the proportion of the population that is easily programmed by a method that does not require facts for decision-making decisions, Democrats have left a vacuum by not tailoring their message to that speak in the appropriate manner.
A friend of mine recently created a site that provides one of the legs on a multi-legged stool with resources to help with our messaging. Voter Education Project forms the backbone of his work. As of today, it is still a work-in-progress. Drop by, read his material, and provide him feedback.
The lasting and necessary Progressive/Democratic comeback will take a lot of work by a myriad of projects. No one activity will have all the answers nor will it reach everyone. The AIDS virus was conquered with an approach that bombarded it from all sides, all its weaknesses. This made mutating and fighting much more difficult and while not eradicated it became manageable. That is what we can do with those that continue to vote against their interests. We make load so small that it is ineffective in killing progress.
