Happy Thanksgiving from the depths of my heart. As we contemplate the name of the holiday let’s view it going forward as giving thanks to all of those who afforded us whatever successes we have attained.
It is important that one knows it is only because of those who willingly and unwillingly created the path we are riding on and hopefully lengthening for others as we pay it forward, that we accomplished what we have.
No from within that most people are good. Externalities, influence from those with ulterior motives not beneficial to anyone but the perpetrators are responsible for creating false divisions.
As you sit (or stand) to have Thanksgiving dinner, listen a lot. Identify the genesis of the thoughts those spewing ideas you know are patently false, misleading, or downright hurtful. Many times they come from a position fear or even losing a privilege they thought they are losing but really never had.
Ask questions civilly and respectfully about the particular issue you disagree with. Posit realities and then ask the person how they would go about solving it if they were all-powerful. Listen intently. If a part of there answer is completely wrong, don’t say it is wrong but use a world reality where it breaks down, and then ask them for a solution. What usually happens is that if you have the right ideas, it will converge to yours.
This works perfectly with the Medicare for All debate. Time and time again when I am able to get a dialogue going, without using the term, the solution always converges on to support all the policies articulated in Medicare for All. This same technique can be used with the Green New Deal and many other progressive policies that are existential.
If you stumbled on to this post today I ask that you do several things since moving the needle will require all of us engaging from the grassroots. The media is owned by the same people that continue to push (read force) an agenda that is beneficial to a few and as such detrimental to most of us. Please do one, a few, or all of the following to help this one activist do his small part to aid the path to the solutions.
