Julian Castro recently endorsed Elizabeth Warren for the Democratic Nomination for President of the United States. While some Bernie Sanders supporters are disappointed, they should not. Here is why.
Julian Castro endorses Elizabeth Warren
We have several progressives running. Different people for different reasons prefer Bernie Sanders over Elizabeth Warren or even Andrew Yang and vice versa.
I see three solid candidates that are seeking transformational change. There are differences between how they intend to get there.
All our candidates, win or lose, will be fine. The most they will have is a bruised ego. We tend to use these candidates as unnecessary proxies for pugilistic battles that when done among those who agree on most things, can be used against us.
Let’s let the process play out. Let’s fight as hard as we can for our progressive candidate to capture more than 50% of the popular vote. If we have a brokered convention we see which progressive can attract the most delegates and we throw our weight behind them to prevent some in the Democratic Party who think they know best, from using the second round to force a corporate candidate.
Julian Castro sent out the following email.
When I suspended my campaign for president, I said that I wasn’t done fighting for what I believe in.
I’m so proud of the campaign we built together—fighting for the most vulnerable people, standing up for immigrants and people who are poor, and working towards an America where everyone counts.
The American people need a champion in Washington who will be a president for everyone. Someone who’s unafraid to fight like hell to make the big changes we need in the years ahead.
That’s why today I’m proud to endorse Senator Elizabeth Warren for President of the United States. Please take a moment to watch my announcement video and then add your name to say you’re ready to continue fighting alongside me and Elizabeth for a better future.
Senator Warren and I share a bold vision for the future—an America where no matter who you are or where you live, you can find good housing, your kids can get a good education, and you can have good job opportunities.
I’ve seen firsthand her commitment to this vision. We both served in the Obama administration, we worked alongside one another to boost housing opportunity while I was at HUD, and I’ve been so impressed with how hardworking and groundbreaking her campaign has been.
Elizabeth knows that big change doesn’t come by playing it safe or doing it alone.
We need a grassroots movement to take on the special interests in Washington, and a president who will push for big, structural change.
Elizabeth has a plan for that, and I’m ready to join her to get it done. If you’re ready to continue fighting alongside me and Elizabeth, please add your name so I know you’re with us.
My grandmother came here as an orphan from Mexico when she was seven-years-old. She worked her entire life as a maid, a cook, and a babysitter to provide for her family—and just two generations later, one of her grandsons is a Congressman, and I was a candidate for President of the United States. That’s the promise of America.
Elizabeth will fight for that promise because she’s lived the American Dream. She grew up on the ragged edge of the middle class in Oklahoma. She’s the daughter of a janitor, and she went on to become a public school teacher, law professor, public servant, a US Senator, and she’s the best person to be the next president.
Both of us were blessed with the kind of opportunity we’ve had because we worked hard, our families worked hard, and because our country gave us a shot to succeed.
There’s one candidate who I believe will make sure that shot is available to everybody in this country—that’s Elizabeth Warren. And I’m asking you to believe in her too.
If you’re still willing to fight for president who understands the struggles everyday Americans face, for a president who isn’t afraid to take on the tough issues, for a president who will put people first, then I hope you’ll add your name to join us.
Our fight for the future has just begun.
¡Juntos ganaremos! Together, we will win!
For the Future,
Julián
