Trump makes it clear: Corporations 1st, People last.

April 11, 2020 By Egberto Willies

Sorry, there was a YouTube error.

When one reads between the lines of every Donald Trump press conference, it is clear he is all about making corporations whole; people damn. Hell, he is even willing to risk the lives of Americans by having them go back to work above and beyond their safety.

Corporations over people at all cost

The Trump Network, Fox News are all starting the indoctrination process of their listeners. They are trying to minimize the COVID-19 pandemic and using immoral persuasion to try to pressure authorities to get back to business as usual.

It clearly started with people like Lieutenant Governor of Texas Dan Patrick making the asinine implication that older people are willing to sacrifice their lives for the economy, read corporations.

“You know, Tucker, no one reached out to me and said, ‘As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren?’” Patrick said. “And if that’s the exchange, I’m all in.”

“That doesn’t make me noble or brave or anything like that,” he added. “I just think there are lots of grandparents out there in this country like me.”

And then there was Glenn Beck sitting behind the comfort of his home studio advocating people that people go back to work irrespective of the possibility of dying.

“I mean, I’m in the danger son,” Glenn Beck said. “I’m right at the edge, I’m 56. In Italy, they’re saying if you’re sick and your 60, don’t even come in. So, I’m in the danger zone. I would rather have my children stay home and all of us who are over 50 go in and keep this economy going and working, even if we all get sick, I would rather die than kill the country. ‘Cause it’s not the economy that’s dying, it’s the country.”

MediaMatters points out the following.

Between Thursday afternoon and Friday morning, there has been an increased wave of right-wing media figures calling for an end to the economic lockdown in place to combat the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. As they’ve begun to explain rather openly, the cost for jobs and businesses is just too much for what they deem is a low death figure being reported.

Left out of all these discussions is a key detail: The reason that COVID-19 death predictions have been revised down from over 2 million to a (still horrific) figure of up to 240,000 is precisely because of the social distancing and stay-at-home orders. If that regimen were to simply be lifted, then the projected deaths would rise again — especially if the health care system were to become overwhelmed.

But as they miss this point, many of these right-wing media figures seem to think even this reduced level of deaths has come with too high an economic cost.

The sad thing is that Trump and his cabal want Americans to go back to work even if it will get them sick or even cause their deaths. Yet they have no desire to hold up their end of the bargain. That is, provide Medicare for All in the event people get sick, provide childcare subsidies for those who cannot afford it given their meager wages, or provide a healthy working or living environment to make life pleasurable.
