Roland Martin has a wake-up call one hopes that the Democratic Party heeds sooner than later because it is existential for many of us.
Roland Martin gets real on Velshi
As many are obsessed with all the shenanigans of Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor-Greene, Republicans are busy destroying our democracy behind the scenes. This segment is a wake-up call.
Ali Velshi postulated to Roland Martin that policy wins are not near enough to protect against the Republican assault on Democracy. Like very few, an animated Martin laid it out as he admonished Democrats and castigated Democratic obstructionists Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ).
Martin points out that Republicans already undemocratically controls the Supreme Court, a large majority of state legislatures, and most governorships. This gives Republicans the power to gerrymander their districts into the continual march towards further undemocratic Republican control of the House and state legislatures.
Republicans intend to fulfill the trifecta. While gerrymandering can undemocratically get them majorities with a minority of the population in congressional districts, it does not work in statewide elections where everyone votes irrespective of the district. They are now working on a solution to that problem, extensive voter suppression in state legislatures that ensure those predisposed to Democratic policies find it much harder to vote.
Roland Martin is correct for calling out Democrats and specifically Manchin and Sinema. If they really believe in Democracy, they must kill the filibuster.
