General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19. He was fully vaccinated. We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment. We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather and a great American.

American historian Jon Mechan had some of the most prescient statements about Colin Powell.
“He is in the tradition of George Washington and George Marshall,” Jon Mecham said. “He understood that the country was imperfect. He also understood that as Frederick Douglass once said, ‘There is no soil so conducive to reform as American soil.’ He believed his own story was a representation of the country to progress from imperfection to a little closer to what we all want.”
“It is not that Colin Powell was perfect,” said Jon Mecham. “He would be the first person to tell that’s not the case. But he was a heck of a lot closer to what we should want in our public life than so many of the people who dominate our conversation and our mindshare.
That Colin Powell was fully vaccinated and still died from COVID complications should dissuade no one from taking the vaccine. Vaccination is about increasing your chances to fight off the disease. There will be a few breakthroughs, but in the aggregate, vaccination saves most of us.
