Condoleezza Rice, a former Bush Secretary of State, agrees that President Biden has the right policy on Ukraine. How will the Right react?
Condoleezza Rice gets real on Biden
After watching Condi Rice recently on the view, it seems like she was straddling the fence about the January 6th attempted coup on the United States by portions of the Republican Party. It was a deadly insurrection by American homegrown terrorists. Yet, Rice tried to minimize it as she suggested Americans move on.
Rice, who served as secretary of state in the George W. Bush administration from 2005 to 2009, … added that it’s time for lawmakers to “move on in a lot of ways” and focus on issues affecting U.S. citizens. “I’m one who believes that the American people are now concerned about what we call ‘kitchen table issues’ — the price of gasoline, inflation, what’s happening to kids in school,” Rice said.
Sunny Hostin, a co-host on “The View,” pushed back. “I think it’s really politically expedient for Mitch McConnell to say ‘Let’s move on,’ especially when the former twice-impeached disgraced president enjoys attacking Mitch McConnell,” Hostin said. “But the problem is that past will become prologue if we don’t find out exactly what happened on Jan. 6.”
“And we will,” Rice interjected. The former secretary of state acknowledged that the events on Jan. 6 were shocking. “Our institutions have to be upheld,” she said, adding, “I don’t know how much more strongly I can say what happened on Jan. 6 was wrong.”
For that reason, it was a pleasant surprise when she offered her objective support for the job that President Biden was doing in Ukraine, given the current circumstances.
“I hope that we are supporting Ukraine’s aspirations strongly enough,” Condi Rice said. “I have to say that I think that the Biden administration is playing a difficult hand rather well these days. And it is ultimately, though, up to the Ukrainian people and their leadership to keep trying to build that strong, democratic, independent Ukraine that is fighting corruption and building an economy. It can be done.”
It is deplorable that many Republicans, including Trump, are currently giving vocal support and admiration to Vladimir Putin for his invasion of a sovereign democratic country.
“This is genius,” Trump said in a conservative talk radio interview at his Mar-a-Lago resort, echoing his past praise of the Russian president. “Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine — of Ukraine — Putin declares it as independent. Oh, that’s wonderful. He used the word ‘independent’ and ‘we’re going to go out and we’re going to go in and we’re going to help keep peace.’ You’ve got to say that’s pretty savvy.” …
Conservative commentator Candace Owens tweeted this week: “I suggest every American who wants to know what’s actually going on in Russia and Ukraine, read this transcript of Putin’s address. As I’ve said for month — NATO (under direction from the United States) is violating previous agreements and expanding eastward. WE are at fault.” …
“It may be worth asking yourself, since it is getting pretty serious: ‘What is this really about? Why do I hate Putin so much?’” Carlson said Tuesday. “‘Has Putin ever called me a racist? Has he threatened to get me fired for disagreeing with him?’” …
“I have enormous respect for him,” Pompeo said in a Feb. 18 call with the Center for the National Interest. “I’ve been criticized for saying that.” And he told Fox News: “He’s a very talented statesman. He has lots of gifts. He was a KGB agent, for goodness’ sakes. He knows how to use power. We should respect that.”
Now that Vladimir Putin has invaded Ukraine and people are dying, will these American traitors and Putin appeasers change their stance as the carnage and immorality come into full view? I doubt it. Cancer is going through a particular sect in our society that we must carve out and destroy. Absent that, our democracy dies.
