Beto O’Rourke and Mike Collier will make Democratic winners with two different but compatible styles. Eradicating viruses sometimes requires different angles of attack concurrently.
Democratic Winners!
I have been concerned that I have not seen good messaging or a fighting spirit in Texas Democrats or Democrats. Watching Beto O’Rourke and Mike Collier this last week gave me hope.
This cycle Texas is blessed to have two warriors at the top of the ticket who battle differently but effectively. Neither of these candidates is as progressive as I am, but they are immediately electable in Texas.
We have a lot more mind-changing to do before we can elect more progressive candidates at the top or before candidates can expose their inner progressiveness. This angst is the state of our Democratic reality shared throughout our country.
Mike Collier has been driving and flying around Texas for several years as he learned what Texans needed and wanted. One of the things I have admired about him is that he is doing what I wish and have asked many Democratic candidates to do. Get out of our choirs and silos. The Democratic message of economic and inclusion of every form would appeal to all.
Collier never leaves ambiguities, as demonstrated in this recent interview with Chris Hayes. We need candidates with that ability because our media tend to malign Democrats. Collier stuck it to both Greg Abbott and Dan Patrick even as Chris Hayes played devil’s advocate.
And then there is Beto O’Rouke. He took it to Greg Abbott directly at the press conference understanding that he would then get a trail of reporters to make his case to Texans. O’Rourke pointed at the governor and told him he was doing nothing to address gun violence in the state. But that was not the end. He gave his press conference providing solutions outside the bloviating clown show that was Abbott’s presser and tagged the governor for his incompetence and control by the NRA.
And this news cycle lives on for all to learn, see, and activate.
