Statements from a royal commentator, while sounding kind, are dangerous. They humanize a monarchy that exploited, enslaved, and savaged others.
Royal callousness
The American cable and on-air media have been covering the events covering Elizabeth II’s death ad-nauseam. The human in all of us, whether the oppressed or the oppressor, has a certain sorrow in our hearts over the death of anyone and the effects on their loved ones.
We have been covering the misrepresentation in several blogs, one titled “Ali Velshi schools those glorifying the queen & monarchy on the stench of unatoned colonialism” and another titled “FINALLY! Ali Velshi destroys a historian complaining when told the truth about Britain’s evil past,” and another “Queen Elizabeth II’s coverage: Unwarranted & undeserved, but it creates subservient populations.” It is important that we push back on the historical representation of the monarchy.
While what Daisy McAndrew said like gave many a warm feeling, I found it insulting and downright offensive.
“This is affecting people all around the world. And I think that is a source of pride, of national pride, because of course,” the royal commentator said. “I think I’ve said this to you before, Andrew, and when you try to reflect and really define what it was that the Queen meant to us and why she was so popular, it does come back to national pride.”
America is the epitome of multiculturalism, multiethnic, and multiracialism. Spending this inordinate amount of time on a subject that a large part that hurts a large part of the population is likely more callous than the royal commentator.
“She [Queen Elizabeth II] epitomized the best of us in many ways and what a lot of us aspire to be and aspire for the country to be,” the royal commentator continued. “Dignified, hardworking, and, as I said, a source of national pride. So to hear those two ladies from Texas have come all the way to show their respect is very, very flattering to us.”
Well, I explained this more extensively in the included video. That said, the Queen has scores of servants, so I am not sure how hard any queen works. As far as aspiring to be here — not so fast. The Queen has never apologized or repaid the pilfer that has enriched her country and her family. We should praise those who atone.
