Talking to Democrats on how to engage their right-wing family & friends productively

January 18, 2023 By Egberto Willies

Sorry, there was a YouTube error.

I was invited to speak to the Cy-Fair Democrats in the Houston Metro Area to discuss the elections and why we are not doing better electorally. It was a very interactive and productive engagement.

How Democrats Win!

Watch Politics Done Right T.V. here.

I made several points in my talk with the Cy-Fair Democrats Club. I hope I communicated that we must not cede any part of our country to the Right-Wing. We must fight for rural, urban, suburban, and exurban areas.

I provided an example from a speech Elizabeth Warren gave at Netroots a few years ago. She made it clear that most Americans are indeed progressives if one asks them for the policies they want. So my question to the audience was, “Why are we not winning more?”

The answer is not all that complicated. We are poor at articulating the progressive message. As well, we do not go for the jugular. As an example, the Texas legislature is murdering Texans by denying them insurance Texans have already paid for over and over again. Their refusal to accept the Medicaid Expansion to the Affordable Care Act is evil. But most people in the rural areas are not aware they are losing their hospitals and lives because of that evil Republican choice.

I pointed out that it is our responsibility to engage these people. After all, the caricature that Republicans and Fox News make of Democrats and Progressives gives those on the Right the impression that we are soulless people with horns. We must change the narrative. We cannot let them define us.
