Newly Elected Harris County Democratic Chairman Mike Doyle speaks. Save the Texas Observer!

March 29, 2023 By Egberto Willies

Sorry, there was a YouTube error.

Mike Doyle, Texas’ new Harris County Democratic Party Chairman discusses where he’s taking the party. We must save the Texas Observer, the progressive magazine of Texas, from being shuttered.

Newly Elected Harris County Democratic Chairman Mike Doyle speaks.

Harris County Texas is one of the bellwether counties in the country. Over the last several election cycles it has lived up to expectations. Even in last year’s difficult election cycle where obstacles from the state were in full vogue, the county proved that, in fact, the path to a blue Texas has its genesis in Harris County.

The Harris County Democratic Party leadership has changed. A few weeks ago, the precinct chairs elected a new chair. The county is blessed with scores of competent candidates who entered the race. A large majority of the precinct chairs elected Mike Doyle on the first ballot.

Chairman Doyle has hit the pavement running. He said that the key to the Harris County Democratic Party’s success is to view Voter Protection, Education and Engagement as a Year-Round activity, not something that we think about only at election time. He has a seven point plan for that.

  1. Start on Day One building a Coordinated Campaign infrastructure that will turn-out 1.1+ million Democratic votes in Harris County in 2024. This is critical to protect all our Democratic elected officials, but particularly our county-wide elected Judges and multicounty Appellate Court Justices.
  2. Make Voter Protection, Education, and Engagement a Priority Year-Round –Only by embedding voter protection, education, and engagement into all our information, tools, and processes can we overcome the obstacles Republicans are erecting to prevent Democrats from voting.
  3. Prioritize the work of Precinct Chairs, by providing resources, information, and tools to support the critical work of organizing in our communities.
  4. Expand the Data Management team and ensure Democratic Clubs & Organizations and Precinct Chairs have access to VAN and other data tools to support their work and broaden their impact.
  5. Prioritize our Democratic Clubs and Organizations by providing resources and a fulltime staff member to support and grow their critical work.
  6. Amplify and protect the work of Democratic elected officials –especially our Judges and other elected officials. Our Democratic officeholders are doing great work every day, and the Party needs to be consistently telling their stories loudly and clearly. We need to act NOW to defend our Democratic officials and Judges from a repeat of the threats, lies, and negative attacks they endured during the 2022 campaign.
  7. Prioritize fundraising by engaging Sustaining Members, traditional donors, and digital donors to fully fund and sustain the work of the Party.

Chairman Mike Doyle sits down in-studio with Politics Done Right to articulate the public version of his plan.

Save the Texas Observer!

The Texas Observer, the Progressive bastion of Texas is set to close in the next few days. That is a travesty. In a state dominated by political liars and a timid mainstream media, there are not many places where one can get the unadulterated truth.

The Texas Observer reported the following.

The Texas Democracy Foundation, the nonprofit parent of the Texas Observer, told its staff Monday that it is laying off employees—including journalists and editors—and ceasing publication on Friday, March 31, 2023.

A Go Fund Me was established so that readers and supporters of the Observer can give a lifeline to staff and journalists. …

What does the Observer mean to its journalists and to Texans? Editorial independence and journalistic freedom have been the hallmarks of the Observer since its founding in 1954. The publication has been freer—less encumbered by the demands of business, advertisers and grantmakers—than any other publication of its stature. As such, the institution has been a proving ground for countless journalists over the years and continuing to this day, and a vital watchdog to extremists, corporations and politicians who would harm Texas and Texans.

Will you help save the staff of the Observer by contributing now?

While Right-Wing publications are well funded from the deep pockets of the corporatocracy, Progressive magazines and other online publications are funded by you. Let’s make sure to support them all. We seed the internet to ensure the well-funded Right Wing propaganda does not outstrip the truth.
