AOC nails it: Fix the court by adding judges, impeachments if seats are sold, & strict ethics rules

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) urged that the Supreme Court be fixed as it puts our Democracy in danger by playing the role of an illegitimate Congress to overrule the President and Congress.

AOC nails it.

AOC did not pull any punches about the Supreme Court. She understands that with the latest Supreme Court rulings, the body has moved beyond interpreting the constitutionality of law into the legislative realm. This was especially evident with the Student Loan debt relief that the Court deemed unconstitutional. At best, that would have been a debate between the Executive and Legislative branches that could have been resolved by Congress explicitly legislating that the president did not provide the relief, which Congress likely would not have done. But instead, six fascist judges singlehandedly changed the personal economies of millions of Americans.

Dana Bash attempted to create an interparty squabble between the President and AOC. A now very mature and politically savvy AOC did not bite. She turned the answer into one that asserted what Congress should do to rail in a rogue Supreme Court.

“If Chief Justice Roberts will not come before Congress for an investigation voluntarily, I believe that we should be considering subpoena,” AOC said. “We should be considering investigations. We must pass much more binding and stringent ethics guidelines where we see members of Congress, where we see members of the Supreme Court potentially breaking the law, as we saw in the refusal with Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from cases implicating his wife on January 6th.”

Ocasio-Cortez did not stop there. She invoked the “I” word.

“There also must be impeachment on the table,” AOC said. “We have a broad level of tools to deal with misconduct, overreach, and abuse of power. The Supreme Court has not been receiving the adequate oversight necessary in order to preserve their own legitimacy. And in the process, they themselves have been destroying the legitimacy of the court, which is profoundly dangerous for our entire democracy.”

She nailed it.
